Did you know?
The Ontario government is in the process of overhauling the Employment Standards and Labour Relations Acts. If you have employees, this will likely have an impact on your business, and in some cases a significant impact. These changes will be in effect in 2017 for the most part, including but not limited to the drastic increase in the minimum wage, equal pay for part-time and casual staff, new scheduling requirements, paid emergency leave even for all employees regardless of the size of the company, increased vacation time and pay, new and otherwise extended Leaves of Absence, and significant changes to the use of temporary help agencies. Improper characterization of an “independent contractor” will become subject to enforcement. In addition to all of this the Ministry of Labour is hiring 175 new Inspectors which may lead to higher risks of complaints, audits, fines and orders. These amendments will also make it easier for unions to organize workplaces and in some cases the new Employment Standards will override current collective agreement provisions you have already negotiated with your union.

Does Your Business Have a Mentor?
Businesses That Have Mentors Double Their Survival Rates
Having a business mentor, is an opportunity to benefit from the experience of seasoned business professionals to overcome challenges, grow your business, improve your knowledge base, and achieve business success. While more than half of all businesses fold within the first 5 years, a survey by The UPS Store shows that 70 percent of those with mentors survive. And that as little as three hours of mentoring can help small businesses earn more and grow faster.
